Ron Johnson: Instability in Iran Talks Should Concern Americans

By    |   Thursday, 25 Jun 2015 09:45 PM

Every American "ought to be concerned" about President Barack Obama's efforts to strike a deal with Iran over curbing its nuclear arsenal, Senate Homeland Security Chairman Ron Johnson told Newsmax TV on Thursday.

"This administration is just so dedicated to doing a deal, even a really bad deal," the first-term Wisconsin Republican told "Newsmax Prime" host John Bachman. "I'm so concerned about President Obama's desire to strike a deal with the ayatollahs — and I have no idea why he's putting that level of faith and trust in them."

The deadline to reach a nuclear deal with Iran is Tuesday. Secretary of State John Kerry is expected to fly to Vienna on Friday for talks that are expected to resume over the weekend.

The other nations involved in the negotiations include Britain, China, France, Germany, and Russia.

"There's so many discrepancies in terms of what this administration is talking about versus what the ayatollahs are talking about," Johnson told Bachman. "Whether it's the 10,000 kilograms of enriched uranium that our administration says is going to be shipped out of Iran, the ayatollahs say, 'No way.'

"Or our administration is saying that there are going to be full verifications, full accountability, full inspections — and the ayatollahs say not in military basis," the senator continued. "Not full disclosure of their past programs.

"I just don't see how this administration can really square that circle."

He also slammed the White House for "not taking cybersecurity as seriously as it should" in light of the Chinese hacking of the Office of Personnel Management's computers.

"I hope it affects the administration in terms of their level of seriousness to actually start addressing cybersecurity," Johnson said. "We haven't been able to pass the most basic laws.

"This is an incredibly serious breach."

Turning to the Supreme Court's 6-3 decision to uphold Obamacare tax subsidies nationwide, Johnson described the ruling to Bachman as "a victory for big government.

"A real loss for the rule of law, and a real loss for hard-working, taxpaying Americans who are going to be footing the bill — not only in terms of the taxes they paid to pay for Obamacare, but also in terms of higher premiums, higher deductibles, less access, lower quality of healthcare.

"This was not a good day," Johnson said.
