Rep. Ron DeSantis: Obamacare Replacement Has 'Pluses and Minuses'

The Republican House proposal to replace the Affordable Care Act needs additional tweaking because it doesn't repeal as much as the GOP's 2016 bill vetoed by President Barack Obama did, Rep. Ron DeSantis tells Newsmax TV.

"My first impressions are the good things are that it repeals a lot of very harmful taxes and effectively repeals some of the business mandates and the individual mandate, which is important," DeSantis, a Florida Republican, said Wednesday to Steve Malzberg on "America Talks Live."

"One of the problems that I see is we put a repeal bill on Obama's desk using budget reconciliation in January of 2016 and this bill does not repeal as much as we have already shown we can do through reconciliation. So there's been a little bit of backtracking on that."

DeSantis said that for example, Congress repealed the Medicaid expansion in January 2016.

"This bill, actually, if Trump signed it tomorrow would still allow new able-bodied adults to join under the Medicaid expansion for another three years. I don't understand why that provision's in there," DeSantis said.

"So there are pluses and minuses, but I think that almost everyone is committed to answering the call of the people that sent us here and to doing a bill that removes the burdens from Obamacare and starts to answer some patient-centered reforms into the system.

"So I think you're going to see action in these committees this week and next week and I think you'll see action on the House floor as well. I think we have a chance to get there but there are some issues that I think a lot of conservatives have just been concerned with."
