Ted Cruz got "pummeled" at Thursday's Republican presidential debate in Des Moines, political consultant Roger Stone told Newsmax TV on Friday.

"I did not think Ted Cruz had a good debate last night," Stone, a former adviser to rival Donald Trump, told "The Steve Malzberg Show" in an interview. "I think his past is catching up with him."

Rival Marco Rubio "exposed" Cruz as a "policy adviser" for former President George W. Bush, Stone said. "He was all for the war in Iraq and for the spending and for our current China trade policy.

"The secret sweetheart loans from Goldman Sachs and Citibank have hurt him — and Trump is just underlining the question of his Canadian birth.

"Trump is right: the U.S. courts and the Constitution have never provided a definition for native-born citizens — and this is a political and legal question that hangs over Ted Cruz's head.

"I do think it's damaged him a bit."

He told Malzberg that front-runner Donald Trump "stole the show" by holding his fund-raising rally for veterans at the same time across town, though that may not mean votes in Monday's caucuses.

"He dominated the media coverage," Stone said. "His event by any measure raising $5 million for veterans, incredible successfully, putting the veterans ahead of his own candidacy and ahead of politics.

"It's a vote-getter, but caucuses are very strange animals. They're not like a primary, where you just go into the machine or a booth and vote.

"You've got to show up in a mass meeting," he continued. "You've got to vote by a show of hands. You have to listen to some speeches — a very different animal.

"I'm still very optimistic about Iowa," Stone said. "Trump told the truth, no one knows until they count the votes."
