Robert McFarlane: Budget Cuts a Factor in Marine Murders

By    |   Thursday, 16 Jul 2015 06:07 PM

Robert "Bud" McFarlane, former national security adviser to President Ronald Reagan, tells Newsmax TV that military budget cuts are responsible for security lapses at a Navy reserve base where four Marines were shot dead in Tennessee on Thursday.

"It's a matter of the sequester of funds to do what it needed in the way of security in several dimensions, but surely the physical security of a facility like this," McFarlane, a decorated Marine veteran himself, told the "Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"Unfortunately, the military has had to make priorities and, of course, the most significant targets will be protected [instead of] those that are not deemed to be as significant.

"However, that puts any human being that is involved in those on the lesser end of the scale at great risk."

Authorities said the gunman, 24-year-old Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez, was also killed as shots were fired at a Navy reserve in Chattanooga — a facility at which two entrances were not manned.

Bill Killian, the U.S. attorney for the eastern district of Tennessee, said the horrific violence was being investigated as an "act of domestic terrorism."

"At a time of hatred being expressed and violence by radical Islam at any target that's vulnerable, we have to expect, unfortunately, this kind of savagery," said McFarlane, architect of the Strategic Defense Initiative and CEO of McFarlane Associates.
