Ex-Ambassador to Saudi Arabia: US Needs Strong Ally in Mideast

By    |   Thursday, 02 Jul 2015 03:34 PM

The U.S. needs to have a strong ally in the Middle East and the relationship between Saudi Arabia and the U.S. could "stand some marriage counseling," a former U.S ambassador to Saudi Arabia who served under President George W. Bush says.

"Iran's certainly not going to be it for the next several generations at least . . . We've got to stick with the Saudis and find a way to make that relationship work," Robert Jordan told "Newsmax Now" hosts John Bachman and Miranda Kahn on Thursday on Newsmax TV.

Jordan, author of the newly released book, "Desert Diplomat: Inside Saudi Arabia Following 9/11," said that as ambassador he was challenged to sort out Saudis who financed Wahhabism or terrorism in the region and their alleged involvement in 9/11.

"They've actually declassified those 28 pages just within the last week or two and I'm now at liberty to say that they make it clear in there that they have found no evidence of any senior Saudi official, a royal family member, having anything to do with the financing of 9/11," he said. "That doesn't of course end the discussion because there certainly have been Saudis who have financed extremism, have financed in many ways a lot of the al-Qaida activities."

He said that moving ahead he expects to see a new renaissance from Saudi Arabia. The newly crowned prince Muhammed bin Nayef is not only a strong counterterrorist figure who has worked closely with the U.S., but another prince, Al-Waleed bin Talal, is dedicating his entire fortune to charity in the future and is a proponent of liberalizing the treatment of women.

"There's a lot of work to be done and we all need to join together to pressure the Saudis to step up the game . . . They're capable of doing it," Jordan said.
