David Swerdlick: No Rioting if Ferguson Cop Not Indicted

There may be some unrest if an indictment isn't brought against a white cop who fatally shot an unarmed black teen in Ferguson, Mo., but don't expect the full scale riots that broke out last August, says David Swerdlick, a contributing editor at the African American news blog TheRoot.com.

"I don't think there's a reason at this point to speculate that there's just going to be massive rioting," Swerdlick said Tuesday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"Could a window be broken? Yes. Could property be damaged? Yes. There's no condoning that under any circumstances from my point of view, but by and large we've seen overwhelmingly peaceful protests here.

"And those protests probably will continue if there's no charges brought against [Officer Darren] Wilson. I do agree with that."

A grand jury is now weighing the case, which turned the predominantly African-American St. Louis suburb into a powder keg of racial unrest last August.
