Gov. Rick Scott: 'Best Jobs Are Right Here in Florida'

By    |   Friday, 05 Dec 2014 10:49 AM

Instead of the traditional fancy inaugural gala, Republican Florida Gov. Rick Scott is crisscrossing the Sunshine State for a five-day “Jobs Jamboree” – barbecues hosted by Florida businesses highlighting the state’s job creators, Scott said Friday on Newsmax TV's “America’s Forum.”

“We will be the number one place in the world to get a great job and that's what we're doing with these job jamborees,” he told host J.D. Hayworth, noting that Florida has created 679,000 jobs since Scott was first elected.

“We have 268,000 job openings and most importantly, we are on the path to being the global leader for job growth and … we're going to make sure when people move to Florida they'll know they can get a great job and their kids can get a great education.”

Scott opted to forego the formal inauguration festivities because that’s not what matters to the “typical family,” he said.

“I grew up in a very poor family and what a typical family cares about is a job, that's what my parents worried about all the time when I was growing up,” he said. “I lived in public housing and so I'm focused on what Florida families care about. They see the success we've had.

“Unemployment has gone from 11.1 to 6 percent, but they want to make sure the best jobs are right here in Florida and that's what I’m going to focus on, that's what I got elected to do and that's what I'm going to do.”

Scott said his office is in the process of reviewing an appeal’s court decision finding that drug testing for welfare recipients, something Scott lobbied for, is unconstitutional.

“I want every child in our state to have the chance, the dream of America,” he said. “They should not be in environment where there's illegal drug use so that's why I worked on that because I care about the kids.”

When asked whether Florida might join the 17 states suing over President Barack Obama’s executive action on immigration, Scott said only that it was a federal issue and that “we're going to put our focus on the things that we can accomplish in Florida and the number one thing is to get more jobs.”
