Richard Perle: ISIS Atrocity Shows Obama's Lack of Terrorism Strategy

Thursday, 05 Feb 2015 03:53 PM

President Barack Obama's measured, poker-faced response to the barbaric execution of a Jordanian pilot is more proof he has no "clear policy" in fighting terror, former assistant secretary of defense Richard Perle says.

"You would think he would be much more involved emotionally because these are among the most horrific scenes that have been put on display," Perle said Thursday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"The fact that they are put on display just makes it worse than the event itself in some ways. He's defensive because he has no clear policy.

"It's ironic that he talks about the lessons of what happens when you leave a place since he's the one who found the exit and pushed us through it prematurely, reducing our presence to the point where we had little or no influence over the governments who then came under attack."

On Tuesday, Obama said the murder of Muath al-Kaseasbeh forces the international coalition against the Islamic State (ISIS) to "redouble the ... determination on the part of a global coalition to make sure that they are degraded and ultimately defeated."

Perle, who chaired the Pentagon's Defense Policy Board and is now a fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, said the president is clueless about the danger the Islamic State poses.

"Around the world there are people who are inspired by ISIS. As those numbers grow — and they are growing — we are going to face and our friends and allies are going to face the threat of this kind of horrific violence in one country after another," he said.

"He's never had a strategy for dealing with ISIS or ISIL and he doesn't have one today."

Jordan is planning strikes against the Islamic State following the terror group's horrific killing of hero pilot — who was placed in a cage and burned alive — an atrocity which was recorded on video.

But Jordan, which executed two Islamic State terrorists in retaliation, still can't make too big a strike against the terror group, according to Perle.

"No, not by themselves they can't. I understand why they're doing what they're doing. One of the people they executed was actually potentially going to be traded to get their pilot back," he said.

"They're an example of how you can wait too long to get engaged. They were not nearly engaged enough until circumstance forced it.

"And one wonders when Obama is going to experience the same realization, which is that either we take ISIS seriously and defeat it, or it's going to grow and become even more violent and even more broadly based."
