Rep. Matt Salmon: All States Should Join 17 Suing Over Executive Amnesty

By    |   Thursday, 04 Dec 2014 11:06 AM

Every state in the country ought to join with the 17 states which filed a lawsuit Wednesday challenging President Barack Obama’s executive action on immigration, Rep. Matt Salmon of Arizona said Thursday.

During an appearance on Newsmax TV's “America’s Forum,” Salmon said that every state will likely have standing “because they are the ones that are going to bear the brunt of much of the cost, governmental cost of this decision and so I absolutely believe Arizona should have joined that lawsuit.”

Salmon discussed the lack of unanimity within the GOP about how to handle funding for the coming year. He and some fellow Republicans disagree with House Speaker John Boehner’s desire to fund everything except “that which might enact the president's illegal action” through September.

Boehner wants to fund the Department of Homeland Security and other agencies that may be involved in executing President Obama’s executive action on immigration only through March, allowing the new Congress to handle it from there.

“The problem is, and I've mentioned this in conference a couple days ago, in a few short weeks we will all raise our hand to the square and swear to defend the Constitution against all enemies both foreign and domestic,” Salmon said. “That oath is being broken if you vote to fund something that you believe is unconstitutional for one minute much less three months.”

“By March the president could be well underway issuing most of those green cards anyway. It'll be moot. I've heard them say wait until the cavalry comes and we're going to fight another day, but the fact is that day may never come, you and I, when we served in Congress remember how much of the Contract with America that we passed out of the House that went nowhere in the Senate because they couldn't get to 60? Well, they still have that problem. They still have to get to 60. We have a responsibility to do our job here and now and the Founding Fathers gave the Congress the power of the purse for these very purposes to be able to fight with the president when we disagree on policy matters. This is our responsibility.”

Salmon said he hopes Americans who disagree with funding the executive action for any period of time will contact their representatives, since lighting up the phones is “the one thing politicians listen to.”
