Susan G. Komen Founder Brinker: Put Congress' Benefits on Hold Until Health Bill Done

A potential strategy lawmakers could use as they try to figure out the future of healthcare is to tell them their health benefits are on hold until legislation is passed, Nancy Brinker told Newsmax TV.

Brinker, the founder of the Susan G. Komen breast cancer foundation, appeared on "America Talks Live" and told host Miranda Khan the healthcare debate is a personal one.

"I spoke to a group of young Republicans last week, and I said one of the strategies is to tell all the members, Democrats or Republicans, we're putting on hold all of your benefits until you come to a conclusion and come to an agreement about a healthcare bill that serves most of the members, most of the Americans today, and people stood up and cheered," said Brinker, a former U.S. ambassador to the Republic of Hungary.

"At the end of the day, this is the most personal kind of legislation that they will be legislating. They're going to have to negotiate."

Brinker also spoke about Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., who was diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer last week after having a brain tumor and blood clot removed.

"I can't tell you how much he's helped the organization I created, Susan G. Komen, many, many times, and pieces of legislation where we needed bipartisan support," Brinker said.

"He's just a great, great human being . . . if anybody can be a great fighter, it'll be Sen. John McCain."
