Michael Reagan: Preibus Must Decide on Trump Commitment

By    |   Monday, 21 Mar 2016 04:49 PM

Reince Preibus has to get off the fence and make a pivotal commitment as the chairman of the Republican National Committee (RNC) for GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump — or is he against him?

That's the question Michael Reagan, a political commentator and son of President Ronald Reagan, brought up Monday on "Newsmax Prime" on Newsmax TV with J.D. Hayworth, as the two discussed Preibus' deft tiptoeing around the subject.

"What does he want the Republican Party to be in the future? Does he want it to be the party of Donald Trump or the party of Ronald Reagan? That's the decision Reince Priebus is in fact going to have to make." Reagan asked.

But he said that as unhinged as the 2016 presidential race seems to be, it's all just part of the American political process. Even if it results in a brokered convention.

"This is the process that, in fact, you go through. There are people who are against Trump, there's people who are for Trump," Reagan told Hayworth.

"I'm sure the RNC is scared to death of a Donald Trump presidency or a Donald Trump running for the highest office — what it might do to the Senate of the United States, the House of Representatives. I'm sure they have that concern.

They had the same concern about Ronald Reagan back in 1976 and 1980. Contested conventions are not a bad deal."

He doesn't agree that candidates should necessarily drop out of the race to give those with a higher delegate count the edge.

"People are asking for everybody to drop out, [Ohio Gov.] Kasich to drop out. Why won't he drop out? Well, if Kasich doesn't win Ohio, Donald Trump wins Ohio and he gets closer and closer to getting the nomination of the party," Reagan said.

"This is what you go through. This is the process you fight for and what have you. Contested conventions are a hell of a lot more fun. They're coronations."

A contested election will occur if Trump, who is leading in the delegate count, fails to get enough to put him over the top and seize the nomination.
