Ray Flynn: Try 'Human' Solution Before Wiping Out ISIS

By    |   Wednesday, 25 Feb 2015 11:39 AM

Before embarking on a strategy of all-out destruction of ISIS, America should attempt to resolve the situation by finding "common ground" with its enemy, former Boston Mayor and former Ambassador to the Holy See Ray Flynn said Wednesday on Newsmax TV's "America's Forum."

"We need people who can get things done, know how to move people, talk to extremists on both sides and look for some common ground," said Flynn. "People say let's wipe them off the face of the earth or come in with drones, but in the final analysis, the answer is always better human understanding and relations."

"As extremist as these people are, there's got to be a common ground and a way to bring these people together, whether they be Coptic Christians, Muslims or evangelicals. There has to be some common ground," Flynn said.

"I don't know if our American foreign policy is equipped and understands the important role that religion and faith (play) in solving a lot of what seems to be insurmountable problems in the world today.

"Wars won't end it. Human understanding is the best choice we have at this particular time."

If that strategy is unsuccessful, then all options are on the table, Flynn said, a message that should be imparted to the terrorists from the get-go.

"Tell them the United States and the international community is going to do everything they can to make sure that you no longer are able to function and operate as any kind of entity in this part of the world. And that will require any and all options, including military options," he said.

"You have a choice to make. It's either go along or don't go along and pay deep consequences.

"That's the United States and the international community that is giving you this ultimatum. ... The international community and the American people will understand that the decision and the consequences are in their hands, not in the White House or the State Department."

The rhetoric needs to end and the American people "have to get off the sidelines, get out of the stands, go into the public arena where (Pope) John Paul II used to talk about all the time," Flynn said.

"It's time for decisive, assertive action and it starts with the White House obviously, but it also requires the support and the strong moral voice of the American people and let that voice be heard to the press, international community and White House."
