Former Boston Mayor Flynn: Those With Faith Are 'Unspoken America'

By    |   Tuesday, 30 Aug 2016 07:15 PM

People of strong faith who are "the unspoken America" are "ready to start surfacing again to make a difference in this country," Boston's former mayor Ray Flynn tells Newsmax TV.

In an interview with "Newsmax Prime" host J.D. Hayworth, Flynn, the former ambassador of the United States to the Holy See and Boston's mayor from 1984 to 1993, praised evangelist Franklin Graham's 50-state "Decision America" tour, which recently came to Boston.

"This is the message that I love and many people do as well," he said of Graham, who is urging people to vote for candidates who uphold biblical principles.

"You don't see them out protesting. You don't see them on TV. You don't see them demonstrating but they're there," he added. "You might see them at church on Sunday… walking with their kids and their families and you might see them volunteering in the soup kitchen. That's the unspoken America that is ready to start surfacing again to make a difference in this country."

"This election will maybe be a wakeup call for people like that to get off their couches and get out there and start voting and start playing a meaningful role in the lives of people who don't have power, don't have money and don't have a lot of influence but they really need a voice in the White House and in Congress," he added.

Flynn, responding to the reported drop in support of GOP nominee Donald Trump among Catholic voters, said the demographic has deep roots in the immigrant experience.

"We're pro-immigrant, we're pro-poor, we're pro-special needs, we're for people down on their luck," he said. "That's the message that motivates and mobilizes Catholic voters… We're not these high in the sky wealthy individuals who can afford making big contributions to political campaigns but we sure as heck are there to support any candidate who really takes a liking and a respect for people that don't have power and influence."
