Retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Ralph Peters gave raves to Ohio Gov. John Kasich and raspberries to Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker as he rated Thursday's GOP presidential debate during an interview on Newsmax TV.

"I've been a Kasich fan for a long time because he's a decent, honest man. He can build bridges, he can work across the aisles, he's a red governor of a blue state, he's wildly popular and we do not need more polarization," Peters said Friday on "The Steve Malzberg Show."

"I want a ferocious national defense against our enemies, but here at home we shouldn't be each other's enemies. Obviously, there are always going to be people on the far left and far right who are irreconcilable, who want it all their way.

"In a democracy, nobody gets everything their way all the time. Although Kasich is a core conservative, he's also a man who realizes that not everybody shares his view of the world."

Kasich won praise for a number of no-nonsense answers, including his response on same-sex marriage — which he doesn't agree with, but is OK with those who do.

Peters also said Kasich also raised an important issue in that Republicans can't afford to let the Democratic Party "continue to keep minority Americans uneducated and unemployable and dependent."

"We've got to somehow bring everybody into the mainstream. We need that human capital, we can't afford that human wastage. And Kasich is a guy who could make a difference because he's not [on] a rigorous ideology," he said.

"He's willing to listen to the other guy and that's what we really need. We need to be able to listen to the other guy. Might reject what he says in the end but at least listen."
Peters — author of the Civil War novel, "Valley of the Shadow," published by Forge — was dismissive of Walker.

"He started losing me when he was asked about evolution. The answer to that question, if a smart reporter brings it up, is that God created Darwin too. Just don't go there. Don't put yourself in not trying to prove that Adam and Eve rode dinosaurs because they didn't," Peters said.

"God speaks to us in parables. I just don't understand why literalists don't get that. I don't want religion or sexuality in the public's sphere. That's not the issue.... I want real policy programs and real solutions to genuine problems."

Asked by Steve Malzberg about Republican frontrunner Donald Trump, Peters said:

"He's a clown. He's a Republican Obama. Now, obviously he and Obama behave very differently but they're both complete narcissists, both fully self-absorbed, wildly selfish, convinced that they're right, that they know all.

"The only difference is that Trump at least has some self-awareness He's a cynic. He's playing it for all its worth. Whereas Obama is self-absorbed without self-awareness. It's a very ugly, ugly situation."
