Ralph Peters: Obama Drags His Feet in Battle Against ISIS

America is moving at a snail's pace in the fight against the Islamic State — a far cry from when it entered World War II and quickly drew up battle plans, former U.S. Army Lt. Col. Ralph Peters tells Newsmax TV.

"After Pearl Harbor, within months we had a broad strategic framework to fight the Japanese and the Nazis," Peters said Thursday on "The Steve Malzberg Show."

"In the time since [President Barack] Obama discovered the Islamic State in the same period and month, we had taken Guadalcanal in the Pacific, fought the battle of Midway and taken North Africa.

"In the period of time since the Islamic State actually started fighting and appeared on the scene … Obama can't come up with a rudimentary strategy?"

The reason for that is the commander-in-chief doesn't want a "real military strategy," according to Peters.

"The Pentagon has been giving him option after option after option. Obama doesn't want to fight and his priorities are skewed. The priority should be to defeat the Islamic State, protect America by defeating the Islamic State," he said.

"I don't care about the Baghdad government. Iraq's gone. Forget it, but defeat the Islamic State. Attack them with all you've got. Instead, we have the phony airstrikes run by lawyers. Trainers aren't allowed to leave their compounds in Iraq, go out and do anything.

"He won't put forward air controllers on the ground and his No. 1 priority in Iraq and Syria is to avoid civilian casualties. He cannot do it. I'm sorry, but with an enemy fighting in urban areas, if you don't tolerate any civilian casualties, you're not going to defeat the Islamic State."

Peters — author of the Civil War novel "Valley of the Shadow," published by Forge Books — added:

"Whenever there's a crisis of any kind or anything goes wrong, [Obama] does the minimum that he thinks he can get away with politically to just make it go away."
