Rev. James Mulford: Pope Francis Looking to Modernize Church's Teachings

By    |   Wednesday, 08 Oct 2014 11:54 AM

The purpose of a global assembly of Catholic bishops underway at the Vatican is to bring bishops and their representatives together to discuss how to apply 2,000-year-old church teachings to the modern world, the Rev. James Mulford said Wednesday on Newsmax TV's "America's Forum."

"They're not discussing how they can change what, for 2,000 years, the church has been teaching, but to apply to today what has been the teaching for 2,000 years," Mulford explained.

"In the United States, we have the U.S. Constitution, the Supreme Court, regional and federal judges and they can't change the constitution, but interpret it to apply to needs today.

"Some of the applications the Supreme Court has been doing the last few years weren't necessary 200 years ago when the country was born. What Pope Francis is doing is not trying to figure out how they can change the rules, but to say the tradition and the history that for 200 years the Catholic Church has been living and offering to their members, how can they renew it, make it fresh and apply it to today's situation."

The synod is centered around a theme of the family, he said, not specific sacraments. He suggested that Catholics, and anyone interested in learning about what Pope Francis and the Vatican are doing go to the source instead of reading about it from a third-party.

The Vatican, he said, has its own portal, news.va, where users can watch the Pope's homilies and read his writings and letters.

Mulford added that the Pope's endorsement of military action to defeat the Islamic State (ISIS) was in the name of religious freedom for all.

"The church isn't looking just to defend Catholics," he said. "We're talking about religious freedom for everyone. When the family thrives, freedom thrives, economy thrives and altruism thrives."
