GOP Candidate in Calif.: It's a Tight Race

The contest for California's secretary of state is a horse race, says Republican Pete Peterson, who is challenging Democratic state Sen. Alex Padilla for the key position.

"We’ve had two polls that have come out in the last month. One has us up by three and another has us down by about five," Peterson said Wednesday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"So just even splitting that difference most of the pundits out here are saying that this stands to be the closest of the statewide races.

"There's no incumbent in this race and so there are again unique opportunities for an outsider to win."

The influential state office oversees registrations, elections, campaign contributions, and business registration.

If Peterson is victorious, the position would be back in Republican hands for the first time in eight years. Democrat Debra Bowen was elected in 2006 and cannot seek another term.
