Pete Hoekstra: US Must Probe Snowden-Like Dump of CIA Secrets

Former Rep. Pete Hoekstra tells Newsmax TV an investigation should be launched into the latest dump of documents by Wikileaks, classified CIA papers it says reveal the software tools the agency uses to hack into cell phones, commuters and television sets.

"It should be investigated out of the Justice Department … this new breach of data," Hoekstra, a Michigan Republican and former chair of the House Intelligence Committee, said Tuesday to Miranda Khan, who is filling in for J.D. Hayworth on "America Talks Live."

"[It] appears there may be another [Edward] Snowden person [involved], except this time instead of being NSA it's within the CIA. So yes, this is begging for an investigation and actually finally catching somebody and punishing them to the full extent of the law."

On Tuesday, WikiLeaks published more than 8,700 documents it says were lifted from the files of the CIA’s Center for Cyber Intelligence. It did not explain how they were taken or by whom. The dump is reminiscent of former NSA analyst Edward Snowden’s release of classified NSA information about the agency’s surveillance methods.

"What this is going to do is it's going to go to the heart of the credibility of the intelligence community on a number of different levels," Hoekstra told Khan.

"Number one, people are going to say, wait a minute, the NSA was breached, the CIA was breached, cannot even our best cyber-security experts in the United States, some who believe they are the best in the world, you can't protect your own data? That's going to be a big issue.

"The second issue is going to be about some of the programs that were in there. There's one in … which the CIA had the capability to go into systems and demonstrate that they penetrate it, but then leave footprints and fingerprints on it that would lead you to believe that someone else were the perpetrators of this breach."

He said that last summer U.S. intelligence had concluded that the Russians were responsible for breaking into Democratic National Committee computers.

"When they knew that the capability existed for people to breach into cyber networks, leave the footprints, implicating someone else, how could they go in and say, we are certain?" Hoekstra asked.

"It's going to call into question their analysis of some of the breaches that occurred this summer."
