Pete Hoekstra: Trump Not Saying Obama Literal Founder of ISIS

By    |   Thursday, 11 Aug 2016 10:14 PM

GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump was not being literal when he said President Barack Obama is the founder of the Islamic State (ISIS), fomer House Intelligence Committee Chairman Pete Hoekstra tells Newsmax TV.

"What Mr. Trump has clearly pointed out is that under Obama and under [former] Secretary of State [Hillary] Clinton, ISIS has achieved unprecedented success because of the environment that they created," Hoekstra told "Newsmax Prime" host J.D. Hayworth.

Trump was referring to the environment Obama and Clinton created for ISIS's growth in Iraq when American troops were pulled out, Hoekstra said. Also, he said, the United States embraced the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt and Libya, enabling the overthrow of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. That led to weapons, fighters, and the Islamist ideology moving into Syria and creating instability there.

"ISIS has achieved unprecedented success in establishing a caliphate," he said, "taking control of the second-largest city in Iraq, Mosul, and expanding to multiple affiliates around the Middle East, Africa, and Asia."

Hoekstra also discussed the report that senior leaders at U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) altered reports on the fight with ISIS, making them appear overly optimistic.

"The intelligence community cannot cook the books," Hoekstra said. "And it appears that … there's a culture that the intelligence community was under that you need to cook the books and give the president intelligence that supported his worldview. In this case, ISIS is the JV team, we're winning. Let's make the intelligence say that."

It should be investigated whether that culture was pervasive in other decisions, Hoekstra said.

"Was the intelligence cooked on the Iranian deal so that the intelligence coming and explaining where Iran was and all of those types of things was that cooked so that Congress and the president would hear what they wanted to hear?" he said.
