Global Security Expert: Peaceful Muslims Afraid to Denounce ISIS

Muslim leaders overwhelmingly reject the violent actions and preachings of the radical Islamic State (ISIS), but many are afraid to say so publicly for fear of being targeted by extremists, says a national security expert.

Richard Friedman, a senior fellow with the Chicago Council on Global Affairs and a national security columnist for Blue Force Tracker, told "MidPoint" host Ed Berliner on Newsmax TV Monday that moderate Muslim leaders have avoided coming forward "for safety's sake."

Friedman, who has worked with Islamic community organizations in Chicago, predicted that "gutsy" Muslim leaders will come forward to say in public what they express in private — that radical terror groups such as the Islamic State, also known as ISIS or ISIL, have "hijacked" the faith with corrupt practices and interpretations.

Friedman said that "99.9 percent of Muslims are very much opposed" to ISIS and that Islamic leaders want to speak out, but that many are "very reluctant to go on camera and be recognized publicly as anti-ISIS, for safety sake."

"However, if we probe more, there will be some gutsy Islamic leaders who will," he said, adding that "at some point the Islamic community is going to have to take the stand … to publicly renounce and rescind what we call the primitive, destructive view of Islam."
