Retired U.S. Army Major Gen. Paul Vallely says far-right National Front leader Marine Le Pen, who triumphed in the first round of the French presidential election, is a "commonsense leader" who wants the French sovereignty back.

In an interview Monday, Vallely told J.D. Hayworth on Newsmax TV that he was impressed with Le Pen's credentials when he recently met her for a private dinner.

"[There's] very much commonsense. She had a great grasp of the issues facing France right now. She's not a ring wing nutcase. She's very solid. A French first," Vallely said.

"She's against globalism. She wants French sovereignty back again. She wants out of the European Union — or at least refine more what the relationships would be. I'm very much in favor [of her] and I like her very much."

On Sunday, Le Pen scored victory as one of two candidates who will face each other in a May 7th runoff for the French presidency. She grabbed 21.3 percent of the vote to former economy minister Emmanuel Macron's 24 percent.

Vallely, who chairs the pro-U.S. think tank Standup America, believes French voters have been galvanized by Donald Trump's surprise victory in the 2016 presidential election.

"People were very, very inspired by what's happened in America with President [Donald] Trump," he told Hayworth.

"[There's a] level of frustration the French people have in demanding, wanting new positive leadership … [They] want their sovereignty back. They want to be France again. They want to have francs again their currency.

"They want to get out of this bureaucratic, very expensive European Union. I think Marine Le Pen in the end is going to … be the winner for the French people."
