Paul Vallely: Iran Fighting ISIS Dangerous for US

Tuesday, 30 Dec 2014 04:40 PM

Retired Army Maj. Gen. Paul E. Vallely says Iran's entry into the fight against the Islamic State (ISIS) and the possibility President Barack Obama may try to establish an embassy in Tehran is fraught with danger for the U.S.

"Obviously, Obama lives in an unreal world. He looks at everything through a political prism, rather than the realities of what's going on over there, but Iran is playing us like a chess board," Vallely said Tuesday on "The Steve Malzberg Show."

"They are so clever. They have everything mapped out. They put some three battalions of Iranian revolutionary guard in there well over a month ago working with the Iraqi forces directly against ISIS.

"Iran is playing this just exactly the way they want to so they can dominate that whole area and at some point in time take out ISIS so they'll be the hegemonic power of the Middle East."

Obama and his administration, Valelly said, are "playing right into the cards that Iran has laid out" because their agenda is to make deals with the Middle East nation at almost any cost.

"That's what his agenda is, to get a deal no matter what the contents are of that agreement or deal and that's the world that he lives in," Vallely said.

"I understand the Defense Department's fighting a lot of these things now, but he's led us down a bad trail where we have no credibility or respect anymore and the Iranians more than anybody know that.

"America looks through the political prism rather than the reality prism of the Middle East and until we look at the realities of what's going on over there we will not have a strategy that'll be beneficial to the United States."

Vallely also predicted the Taliban will expand in Afghanistan with the end of U.S. military operations there.

"The Taliban will considerably increase their impact over there against the Afghan people and when you look at our forces, 10,000 or whatever's going to remain or has remained there, they're going to be assigned to the bases," Vallely said.

"The Taliban is going to continue to blow up convoys or vehicles in downtown Kabul or any other place over there so I'm not sure of the effectiveness of those 10,000."
