Health Policy Expert: Will Consumers Survive Obamacare?

By    |   Monday, 16 Feb 2015 02:31 PM

The question is not whether Obamacare will survive, but whether or not American consumers will survive President Barack Obama's signature healthcare law, says health policy expert Betsy McCaughey tells Newsmax TV.

"It appears as if the administration is doubling down on Obamacare rather than showing any flexibility," McCaughey, former lieutenant governor for New York, told J.D. Hayworth, Miranda Khan and Nick Tate on "America's Forum" Monday.

"The question is, are American consumers going to survive?" she asked.

"Remember when we had choice, when we could decide whether to get insurance, what kind to buy, not necessarily the 'Washington knows best, one-size fits all' plan and we could actually choose to buy insurance any time of the year?" she continued.

"Now, it has to be the 'one-size-fits-all' plan, and the government is actually holding a gun to your head, telling you, you have a deadline," she said.

"Imagine passing a law that the only car you could buy is a four-door sedan, no hatchbacks, no convertibles and you could only buy your car in January," she added.

The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear arguments in March over the Obamacare lawsuit against the Obama administration, challenging the legality of the federal subsidies given to Americans who bought health insurance plans from the federal marketplace.

"If the Supreme Court rules against the administration and against these lawless subsidies, in June, that means the administration may be forced to come to the table," McCaughey contends.

One Obamacare alternative that the former New York lieutenant governor said she likes would get rid of the individual mandate, but "it does offer financial help to people who need help getting insurance."

In addition, "it preserves a couple of these one-liners from Obamacare that people really like, like keeping your kids on your plan until they're 26," she explained.

"It would be a very popular alternative, and it would cover more people than Obamacare," she added.
