Matt Towery: Obama's Speech Important for Midterms

By    |   Tuesday, 09 Sep 2014 02:25 PM

As President Barack Obama's approval ratings fall, it makes his Wednesday speech on the strategy for tackling the growing threat of the Islamic State (ISIS) that much more important, especially in light of the coming midterm elections, says Republican pollster Matt Towery.

"It makes it extremely important because these numbers are beginning to reach a critical mass," Towery told J.D. Hayworth on "America's Forum" on Newsmax TV on Tuesday.

"You're seeing enough polls now that come in from enough organizations showing that the president's approval rating is certainly not rising in a crisis as it has in the past," he explained.

A Washington Post/ABC News Poll released Tuesday found that a majority of Americans think Obama's presidency has been a failure. Fifty-one percent said they disapprove of how he is handling his job, with only 42 percent saying they approve, in the poll of 1,001 adults taken Sept. 4-7 .

"It is in fact going down just at the worst time for the Democrats, right before the midterm elections," he said.

"Tomorrow night he has to deliver some sort of real turnaround in this situation or this could be the beginning of a major surge for Republicans and a considerable pickup of seats in the U.S. Senate and the midterm elections," he added.

Towery says, however, that Republican congressional candidates have to be able to "tie Barack Obama to these Democratic nominees."

"I would tell you that the ads so far that do so have not necessarily been that effective, but I would imagine that this is going to be a 72-hour window toward the end of the election when people start really deciding," he explained.

"At that point in time, if these numbers for Obama stay as low as they are, then that truly will probably push people in the direction of saying, look, I'm not voting for a Democrat because ultimately they're going to vote for the president's policies, I don't like those policies," he added.

Towery says the GOP can pick up six to seven Senate seats, including in Louisiana, Arkansas, North Carolina and Alaska.
