Rep. Lamar Smith: Obama Bowing to 'Extreme Fringe' on Amnesty

By    |   Tuesday, 18 Nov 2014 10:08 AM

The recent push by President Barack Obama to use executive action to legalize millions of illegal immigrants on an unprecedented scale is a political calculus motivated by the demands of the extreme fringe of the Democrat Party, Rep. Lamar Smith of Texas said Tuesday on Newsmax TV's “America’s Forum.”

That fringe element, according to Smith, “wants to treat those from other countries better than we treat our own American citizens. When you are going to give, as he wants to do, work permits, for example, to millions of people who are in the country illegally and now allow them to compete with unemployed and underemployed Americans for scarce jobs, you are putting the interests of people from other countries ahead of the interests of American citizens and those in our country legally.”

A likely explanation is that by granting legal status to those who are here illegally, it will guarantee Democrats’ long-term power base, according to Smith.

“The Democrats know full well what the demographics are here and that about 80 percent of the people who are given amnesty when they're registered to vote will likely vote Democratic,” he said. “I wish that weren't the case but those are the demographics and the president and the Democratic Party are banking on them and that's why I say they're putting the interests of other individuals ahead of the interests of Americans.

"The American people spoke loud and clear on Election Day that they did not want the president to act alone on immigration, yet he is ignoring their votes.

“The president does need to be called to task, he does need to be stopped,” Smith said. “This isn't a dictatorship, this isn't a totalitarian government, this is a democracy.”

Should Obama go forward with executive action, there will be a price to pay, Smith said, including efforts to defund executive order amnesty programs, lawsuits and maybe other actions. Should the fallout result in a government shutdown, the blame lies with the president, not Congress, he added.

“I know the national liberal media likes to say it would be Congress shutting down the government but if we can put a defunding bill on his desk in the next Congress, can't do it this Congress, in the next Congress if we do that and the president vetoes it, believe me, it's the president who's shutting down the government and not Congress,” he explained.

Smith predicts Obama will wait until just before Christmas to take action in hopes that “the media buries it or people are distracted by the holidays.”

“Don’t underestimate the ability of this administration to game the system and spin the news,” he said.
