Pete Hoekstra: Administration Does Not Have Ebola Under Control

The Obama administration needs to step back and develop a strategy for containing the Ebola virus before it starts announcing that it has everything under control, says former House Intelligence Chairman Pete Hoekstra.

"The initial message is, 'We've got this under control,' and then things start spiraling out of control," Hoekstra told John Bachman on "America's Forum" on Newsmax TV on Wednesday.

"The director of the CDC yesterday saying, 'We've got all of our rules and regulations and the protocols, they're all very, very clear,' and then people are saying, 'Well, if everything is so well understood and they work so well, why is it that we now have two nurses that have Ebola?'" he said.

Even though failing to follow protocol has been cited as the reason why two nurses who treated the first Ebola victim in the United States contracted the disease, a nursing union official told CNN there were no protocols in place at the Dallas hospital where they were treating Thomas Eric Duncan, who died on Oct. 8.

The Michigan Republican says the Obama administration needs to "step back, take a deep breath. Before you say you got it under control, understand exactly what's going on."

Hoekstra contends that this is another example of the administration's putting "politics before policy."

"Early in these types of crises, it's better to just stand back and say, we're gathering the data, we're putting together the plan to get this, because then you can build the integrity and the trust," he explained.

"When you come out and say, 'We're in charge, we've got it under control,' and then you look incompetent over the next 48 hours, people will mistrust you and mistrust you for a long period of time," he added
