Agent Leigh Steinberg: Media Scrutiny Magnifies NFL Player Problems

NFL stars getting in trouble is nothing new — but the problem seems much worse now because of the media's rabid coverage of it, says Leigh Steinberg, president of Steinberg Sports and Entertainment and real-life inspiration for the film "Jerry Maguire."

"Players have obviously had problems in terms of the law forever. What's different is that we now have a media that covers it in a very vivid way and each arrest is magnified," Steinberg said Thursday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"I could show you that the rates of drunk driving, domestic violence are much lower among athletes than among the regular population and lower than they used to be,

"But you would not have that impression with these repetitive news cycles because it takes a big group of athletes, coaches at every level and feeds them to us regularly."

Steinberg's comments come amid severe criticism of the NFL for being lenient with football players involved in domestic violence and child abuse cases.

The NFL was thrust into controversy recently when TMZ sports released a security video showing Baltimore Ravens star Ray Rice punching out his wife-to-be in an Atlantic City casino elevator.

The league had suspended Rice for two games, but changed it to an indefinite suspension following public outcry. In addition, he Ravens ended Rice's $35 million contract.
