CAIR Official: Mainstream Muslims Not Invited to Obama's Meeting

By    |   Thursday, 05 Feb 2015 12:35 PM

The White House should be open about who attended President Barack Obama's meeting with Islamic leaders, an official from the Council on American-Islamic Relations tells Newsmax TV.

"It really should have been public — I don't know what they spoke about," Nezar Hamze, a regional operations director for CAIR in Florida, told J.D. Hayworth and Miranda Khan on "America's Forum" Thursday.

"There were people that were selected to go to this meeting," Hamze said.

However, "the mainstream Muslim community was not invited, nor were any representatives from the mainstream American Muslim community," he said.

"I don't believe there was anybody from any CAIR chapter from the entire country that was invited," the Muslim activist told Newsmax. "CAIR is the largest federation in the country, we have the most representation, the most support, and we weren't invited."

The White House says that the meeting included "religious leaders; sometimes that includes leaders that are involved in academia or other specific issue areas," but it would not release a list of the names of the attendees at Wednesday's meeting.

According to the CAIR official, "when you're talking about the administration, they have to use the mainstream. They have to reach the masses.

"If you invite one or two or three people, that's great," he said. "But you know what, let's invite the organizations that can make a difference and do something on the ground."

While many question why the Obama administration doesn't refer to terrorist activities associated with Islam as Islamic terrorism, Hamze agrees with the president on this decision.

"Islam doesn't teach barbarism, inhumane treatment. Islam is a path to peace," he said.

"It's a misnomer, 'Islamic terrorism.' It doesn't make any sense," he said. "These are criminal acts by criminal thugs. That's it.

"They're trying for regional power and they are trying to gain land, and that's what's going on. They can use any undertone that they want.

"They can say the religion says this or this religion says that. It's just absurd, it's malarkey. It has nothing to do with anything that's any mainstream belief," he added.

Former House Intelligence Committee Chairman Peter Hoekstra challenged CAIR while appearing on "America's Forum" with Hamze, saying that it's time for "Muslim Islamic organizations in the United States to condemn the organizations that promote jihad and terrorist activity in the Middle East, in Europe, and in the United States.

"It's time for an organization like CAIR to start condemning the Muslims Brotherhood, to condemn Hamas and Hezbollah," he said.

"It's not good enough to condemn terrorist activities," Hoekstra said. "It's time for these organizations to stand up and condemn the organizations that promote and carry out these attacks."

Hamze said that he and his organization "have completely condemned terrorism and these senseless acts of violence. This recent situation in Jordan was barbaric, inhumane, and for anybody to equate that with any religion is completely absurd."

However, he also admitted that "CAIR is not a monolithic organization."

Within CAIR "they're very liberal viewpoints, and not everyone in our organization thinks like that. Me, myself, I'm very conservative. There are issues that need to be dealt with, and it's important that your viewers know that while we do stand strong for the Constitution and civil rights, there's very different ways how that's approached," he said.

"There is an issue with anti-Muslim bigotry and discrimination, but there's also another issue, and there's an issue of extremism, and we need to deal with that," he said.

According to the CAIR official, when the Islamic State (ISIS) released the video of the Jordanian pilot Muath al-Kaseasbeh being burned alive, "it was a real shock" to Islamic religious leaders that he said he spoke with in Florida.

"It was an eye-opener to them to let them see that these terrorists are targeting and killing Muslims, just like they're targeting and killing every other person in this planet," Hamze said.

"It is waking everybody up, and we are dealing with it, and we are not going to just sit back and be on defense anymore," he said.

"We're taking an offensive approach, we're working with law enforcement, and we're sick and tired of it just like the American population is sick and tired of it."
