Front-running Donald Trump must now prove "there's substance" to a campaign that's decisively established the real estate billionaire is a "big name," former House Speaker Newt Gingrich tells Newsmax TV.

In an interview Tuesday with "Newsmax Prime" host J.D. Hayworth, the 2012 GOP presidential contender and author of "Breakout" says Trump is likely "assembling a pretty good team, because he's a good manager," to head into the second phase of his campaign.

"[H]e clearly now understands that he has made sort of phase one," Gingrich said. "He's a big name. Now he's got to prove there's substance behind the name…. He's going to pull together a team now to write papers and you'll watch him over the next six or eight weeks, he'll release a series of position papers and he will have studied them enough to be able to get by on television and radio answering questions about them."

Gingrich said Trump will be "more substantive in the next phase than he was in the first phase."

"[N]ow he's got to prove that he knows enough to remain the frontrunner and that's going to be a fascinating test," he said.

Gingrich added that Trump is dominating the crowded field of GOP candidate "because he is such an extraordinary performer."

"Ronald Reagan was a great performer. Whether you like him or dislike him, Bill Clinton is a great performer," Gingrich noted. "Barack Obama, who I disagree with about almost everything, nonetheless beat Hillary Clinton in 2008 because he was a much better performer than she was."

Gingrich added that Clinton, however, "hasn't learned anything about how to be an effective candidate," adding: "If anything, she's worse this year than she was back in 2008," he said.

Trump really honed his skills as the reality show host of "The Apprentice," Gingrich maintains.

"[H]e really learned a lot about dealing with television, dealing with audiences, what works, what doesn't work, and I would say he's one of the best people with very short soundbites that I've ever seen," Gingrich said. "What I particularly find impressive is he's always on offense. You ask him questions, he turns them around on you and he's back on offense in seconds… and he has a level of energy that we have very seldom seen in a candidate."

But Trump's appeal goes beyond his persona, Gingrich says, asserting voters are "fed up with politics as usual."

"If you take Donald Trump's numbers and Ben Carson's numbers and Carly Fiorina's numbers, you got about 40 percent of the electorate now in the Republican Party picking people who have never held public office," he noted.

"That tells you that you have a huge chunk of the Republican Party that is fed up with politics as usual, they're fed up with Washington, they want very bold change."
