Ex-CO: Puzzling How NY Prison Guards Were Duped

By    |   Thursday, 25 Jun 2015 06:23 PM

Former prison guard James Conway says that given the amount of training that staffers receive, it's puzzling exactly how the two arrested guards from the Clinton Correctional Facility in upstate New York were duped by the inmates.

"These are not two rookie employees we're talking about," Conway, former superintendent at Attica Correctional Facility, told Ed Berliner on "MidPoint" on Newsmax TV on Thursday.

"Non-uniformed staff that enter into a prison get 40 hours orientation, and part of that orientation is dealing with inmates and segments called 'Con Games Inmates Play,' and they receive hours of training and being on guard for these kinds of master manipulators that these inmates can be," he explained.

"The security staff goes even further. They go through an intensive training academy. They receive 40 hours of annual training," he said. "I'm trying to make sense of how a 28-year security employee can be duped into bringing in some tools for inmates, it's beyond me."

A second corrections officer, Gene Palmer, was arrested on Wednesday in connection with the escape. He was charged with tampering with evidence, promoting contraband and misconduct.

Richard Matt and David Sweat, both convicted murderers, escaped from the prison on June 6. Another prison worker, Joyce Mitchell, was previously arrested for helping the two inmates escape. Matt and Sweat are still at large.
