The massive Medicaid cuts proposed in President Donald Trump’s $4.1 billion federal budget will be a boon to hardworking American families who’ve been "generously" funding others who can’t "take care of themselves,’ Rep. Mo Brooks tells Newsmax TV.

"Let's be clear about Medicaid. Right now we are taking almost $400 billion a year at the federal government level alone — not counting whatever state matches there are — from hardworking American families," Brooks, a Alabama Republican, said Thursday on Newsmax’s "America Talks Live" with Bill Tucker.

"And [we’re] giving it to people for whatever reason have not been able to take care of their own family needs. This money is helping parents who for whatever reason have not successful taken advantage of the opportunities that America offers for kids who unfortunately are burdened by those parents.

"I think that's pretty generous of the American taxpayers to have been willing to sacrifice that kind of money to help people who have not been able to take care of themselves."

Brooks, a member of the House Freedom Caucus, added that at the same time, those taxpayers are seeing their standard of living reduced. As well, he said, "we're taking it from our kids and grandkids in the form of borrowed money [and] that's immoral."

Brooks said Mick Mulvaney, Trump’s director of the Office of Management and Budget, is "making the kinds of difficult choices America must make if we're going to avoid a debilitating insolvency and bankruptcy that will wreak havoc in the American economy, cost American lives and cost American jobs.

"We can debate exactly how the money ought to be spent within the overall parameters that are in this budget but nonetheless we have to be a whole lot more financially responsible in Washington than we'd been over the last few decades."

He took issue with the charge by Sen. Bernie Sanders’ and leading Democrats who say the Republican health care bill now in the Senate is a death sentence for thousands of Americans.

"Let's be clear Bernie Sanders is a socialist, OK. Open socialist. He doesn’t deny it. He's a lot more honest than most of the Democrats here in Washington D.C. who are also socialists," Brooks said.

"Socialists basically believe that the government has to be a nanny for everybody. They are more than happy to take money from those who aren't to give it to those who don't."
