Mo Brooks: GOP Hiding Obamacare Replacement to Keep Americans From Freaking Out

Rep. Mo Brooks tells Newsmax TV that GOP lawmakers in the House are suppressing details of their plan to replace the Affordable Care Act out of "fear" Americans may "rise up and say 'no way.'"

"Right now the House leadership is suppressing the details, the negotiations that are ongoing about Obamacare and what replacement may be," Brooks, an Alabama Republican, said Friday on "America Talks Live."

"They're trying to keep those negotiations as close to the vest as they possibly can probably out of fear or concern that if the general public finds out what the various options are that are being discussed, the public may rise up and say, 'no way.'

"And that might adversely affect the ability of the House and Senate leadership and perhaps even the president to pass what appears to be yet another long-term welfare program with substantial tax increases to pay for it, coupled with increases in deficit and debt to make up the difference."

Brooks told Malzberg he finds the cloak-and-dagger secrecy to be "disappointing."

"I want to repeal it. It should be a one- or two-sentence bill … [stating] the act is repealed. End of subject. And then we move forward from there. That does not appear to be what a majority of the House and Senate members want to do," Brooks said.

Republicans in Congress returned to the capitol this week to complete their self-appointed task of repealing and replacing the Affordable Care Act – also known as Obamacare -- despite increasing difficulty and disagreements.

House Speaker Paul Ryan plans for the House of Representatives to vote on House leaders' Obamacare alternative plan in three weeks, sources tell Politico.

Some conservatives including Sens. Rand Paul, Ted Cruz, and Mike Lee have called Ryan's plan "Obamacare-lite."

This week, Paul attempted to barge into a meeting room where Republican leaders were said to have placed the plan's latest draft, but he was rebuffed and told it was "under lock and key," according to The Washington Post.
