Mo Brooks: Claim That Deadly Yemen Raid Was a Bust Is 'Fake News'

A report that a recent U.S. raid in Yemen in which dozens were killed garnered no valuable intelligence are "made up fake news," Rep. Mop Brooks, a member of Armed Service & Foreign Affairs Committees, tells Newsmax TV.

"It's just fake news by the news media. They have no idea whether there was good intelligence gained or not," Brooks, an Alabama Republican, said Friday to Steve Malzberg on "America Talks Live."

"They do not have access to that kind of classified information, so in effect, probably out of partisanship more than anything else, the news media is just making it up pretty much out of thin air or based on rumors and gossip as opposed to substantive evidence."

The military raid in question — the first operation authorized by President Donald Trump as commander in chief — ended in the deaths of 14 militants, but the causalities also included of dozens of civilians and U.S. Navy SEAL William "Ryan" Owens.

Intelligence sources later told NBC News the raid had not yielded "actionable or vital" intelligence.

"Regardless of whether there was good intelligence gained, you make these military plans based on the information you have at hand. Not always does it work out right," Brooks told Malzberg.

"In the history of the United States there have been plenty of military engagements where the intelligence might have been amiss or the execution was not appropriate, and as a consequence in hindsight you wish you had not engaged in that kind of military endeavor ...

"It's much like a football play. If it works, well, it was a great play to call. But if it doesn't, well hindsight, you know you shouldn't' have done it. But second guessing it is improper by the news media."

Owens' widow Carryn was recognized by Trump during his Tuesday night speech to Congress — eliciting a more than 2-minute-long applause.

The slain soldier's father Bill has refused to meet with Trump and has called for an investigation into his son's death. "Why at this time did there have to be this stupid mission when it wasn't even barely a week into his administration?" Owens' father told the Miami Herald.
