Mideast Expert: Obama 'Annoyed' to Announce ISIS Campaign

By    |   Friday, 12 Sep 2014 02:36 PM

President Barack Obama was "annoyed" at having to announce a campaign against the Islamic State (ISIS, also ISIL) because he thought his previous rhetoric blaming the United States for problems in the world would be a catalyst for peace, military expert Frank Wuco told Newsmax TV's "America's Forum."

Wuco said Obama gave a "reluctant address" on Wednesday when he said the U.S. would expand a campaign to "degrade and ultimately destroy" ISIS, adding that the president had probably dreaded giving the speech "for probably the last two years."

"At a minimum, I think he was annoyed and frustrated, because this is not the way it was supposed to be," Wuco said Friday. "This is where the president and people like him, where their fantasy and their desires for what they wish the real world were, collides with what the real world is. And, it's one that doesn't necessarily like him because he's Barack Obama."

Wuco, a former Naval intelligence officer, said the way it was supposed to be was for Obama to "give some well-received and very theatric speeches from Cairo and other locations around the world, and the rest of the world, including the Middle East, and the Muslim world would go, 'Ah, here's our guy. Wow, we can just go back to being peaceful, loving people.'"

Obama identified with an ideology that held that "U.S. foreign policy is to blame for all of the world's ills," Wuco explained, adding that "if that happens to be Islam, then that fits his narrative, and that's fine with him." He said he thought the president didn't "understand Islam quite as well as a lot of other people think."

Obama's statement during Wednesday's speech where he said, "ISIL is not Islamic" might be correct, if viewed from a Western "prism," Wuco said, but wasn't the perspective of a fundamentalist Muslim.

"If you're ISIL, and you are a person who is a fundamentalist Muslim, this is right in line with the legal [Islamic] teaching and the theological message found within the Koran, the Hadith, and Sharia law," Wuco said.
