Michele Bachmann: Newsweek 'Over-the-Top,' Newsmax 'Balanced'

Rep. Michele Bachmann has praised Newsmax Media for its "straightforward and balanced" coverage of her highly-publicized congressional term representing Minnesota in Washington, D.C.

The outspoken Republican recalled the infamous August 2011 cover of Newsweek, which depicted her with a wild gaze some described as "crazy-eyed." The Newsweek headline screamed, "THE QUEEN OF RAGE: Michele Bachmann on God, the Tea Party and the Evils of Government."

"The Newsweek cover that was put out about me … at the same time, Newsmax also did a cover on me. It was a beautiful cover with a straight-on photo and they just told a straight story," Bachmann said Wednesday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

She was referring to the July 2011 issue of Newsmax Magazine, which showed a beaming Bachmann, on the verge of presidential run, standing next to an American flag. The headline read: Heartland Warrior: Michele Bachmann's Passionate Stand for American Values."

"Newsmax was straightforward and balanced and told the story," Bachman said.

"You saw the side-by-side of the over-the-top bias that came out of Newsweek versus the fair coverage by Newsmax."

Bachmann said she is used to the media routinely trashing women in the Republican Party.

"That is their rule because it's advocacy journalism. It certainly isn't unbiased.  And that's why we need alternative sources like Newsmax. Thank God for you guys."

When the notorious Newsweek cover came out, it was quickly criticized by conservatives, who ripped then-editor-in-chief Tina Brown.

Conservative columnist Michelle Malkin attacked Brown’s picture choice for the Republican Minnesota congresswoman and presidential candidate: "You’ve resorted to recycling bottom-of-the-barrel moonbat photo cliches about conservative female public figures and their enraged ‘crazy eyes?' Really?"

Jonathan Capehart wrote on the Washington Post web page: "There’s no denying that Bachmann firmly believes what she believes. Some might think she’s crazy because of it. Cover photos like this one help to cement that image."
