Michael Reagan: Trump's Secrecy With WH Visitor Logs Hurts His Image

Newsmax TV's "America Talks Live"

President Donald Trump's decision to not routinely release the White House's visitor logs may be perfectly legal, but works against him in the public eye, veteran political commentator Michael Reagan told Newsmax TV.

"He's doing it in the same week as not releasing his tax records," Reagan, the son of President Ronald Reagan, told host Bill Tucker on Tuesday's "America Talks Live."

"What it does is it doesn't allow him to move the ball forward on the issues he wants to really attack.

"It just gives people another reason to think he's absolutely hiding something."

Reagan said the nation's 45th commander-in-chief has every legal right to withhold the White House visitor logs.

"Absolutely. He's got all the legal bounds to be able to do exactly what he's doing, but again, his timing is just off the page on this," he told Tucker.

"It's giving the media something to talk about, and once again it's about perception. You don't want the people perceiving that you're, in fact, hiding something at this point, as we move forward."

Last week, White House communications director Michael Dubke said the decision to keep the logs secret was based on "the grave national security risks and privacy concerns of the hundreds of thousands of visitors annually."

But the American Civil Liberties Union said: "Elected officials work for the people, and we deserve to see government business conducted in transparent daylight."

The civil-rights group called it "simply the latest in a series of efforts by President Trump to avoid public accountability, and it's not the way to improve the people's declining trust in this administration."

And Tom Fitton, president of the conservative watchdog group Judicial Watch, said his organization was "disappointed with the Trump White House decision to keep secret the names of White House visitors."

Trump has also been under fire for refusing to release his tax returns, which most modern-day presidents have.

Reagan, a Newsmax contributor, is the author of "Lessons My Father Taught Me: The Strength, Integrity, and Faith of Ronald Reagan," written with Jim Denney and published by Humanix Books, a division of Newsmax Media.
