President-elect Donald Trump's tweet slamming Republicans for trying to weaken the independent Office of Congressional Ethics showed "Trump wielding his influence," political commentator Michael Reagan told Newsmax TV on Tuesday.

"People need to remember, Trump is an independent who ran as a Republican and was elected as a Republican, but he is truly an independent," the eldest son of former President Ronald Reagan told "The Steve Malzberg Show."

"This is what you're going to see the next four years from this president of the United States.

"Sometimes, he's going to come down on the side of conservatives and the Republicans, other days he's going to come down on the side of Democrats, moderates, and liberals.

"We're going to have to learn to deal with that," Reagan said.

However, "I tend to agree with Trump at this point," he told Malzberg. "People aren't sitting around the coffee table or the dinner table today saying, 'Gosh, I hope they change that whole ethics thing in Washington, D.C.'

"They are concerned, as Trump says, about jobs, about Obamacare. I think he is right: With what they did today, they're right to pull it — but that is something left to another day."

Reagan is author of "Lessons My Father Taught Me: The Strength, Integrity, and Faith of Ronald Reagan," which is available on Amazon.com.
