Michael Reagan: Gorsuch Hearings Are 'Insane'

Wednesday, 22 Mar 2017 02:56 PM

Veteran political commentator Michael Reagan says this week's confirmation hearings for Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch are "insane," and they have left Americans to wonder about the Democratic lawmakers who are questioning him.

"They are insane. If you want to see some insane questions put on by members of the Senate, you need to watch these hearings," Reagan, the son of Ronald Reagan, said Wednesday on Newsmax TV's "The Steve Malzberg Show."

"And then think to yourself, 'Hey, we elected these guys to represent us. What were we thinking when we pushed the lever for these people — the Al Frankens of the world and what have you — to ask these kinds of questions?'

"No, they want a nominee who in fact rules and makes laws from the bench, not interprets laws from the bench. And if they're going to make rules from the bench, they can only make liberal rules from the bench certainly not conservative."

Reagan told Malzberg it will "be interesting" to see whether Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer "is going to force the Democrats not to vote for [Gorsuch] and force the Republicans to use their options in order to get him through."

"I hope that isn't the case but I think hopefully . . . some senators will wake up and say, 'I'm not going to follow the lead of Schumer, I'm not going to follow the lead of those leaders of our party in the Senate, I'm going to vote the way I believe. Here's a qualified person who needs to be on the Supreme Court,'" Reagan said.

Franken, a Minnesota Democrat, grilled Gorsuch on the case of a trucker who filed a federal complaint after being fired for abandoning his cargo when his vehicle broke down in subzero temperatures. Gorsuch ruled in favor of the trucking company.

"I had a career in identifying absurdity, and I know it when I see it," said Franken, a former "Saturday Night Live" performer and writer. "And it makes me question your judgment."

Reagan, a Newsmax contributor, is the author of "Lessons My Father Taught Me: The Strength, Integrity, and Faith of Ronald Reagan," written with Jim Denney and published by Humanix.
