Michael Reagan: Media in Sneaky Plot to Embarrass Trump at Inauguration

Newsmax TV's "The Steve Malzberg Show"

The son of President Ronald Reagan told Newsmax TV he believes the empty seats of Democratic lawmakers boycotting the inauguration of Donald Trump will purposely be kept vacant so the media can falsely report the president-elect's support has waned.

More than 50 Democrats have announced they plan to steer clear of Trump's swearing-in ceremony Friday to protest his criticism of the civil-rights record of Rep. John Lewis of Georgia, after Lewis said he does not view Trump is a "legitimate" commander-in-chief.

What will be done with those 50-some-odd seats?

"Guarantee you they're not going to give them to Trump," Michael Reagan, a veteran political commentator, said Wednesday on "The Steve Malzberg Show." "They've got to see 50 empty seats that the media could in fact focus on for the duration of the day . . . of people who didn't show up."

"And they'll tell you that story, instead of telling you the story of the inauguration talk that in fact President-elect Trump will make — president, at that point, will make — and they'll be really concentrating more on those 50-plus than they will be on the president of the United States."

Reagan did not identify specific media outlets or how they could keep the seats empty, but said, "I think that's part of the game they in fact want to play."

"They'd love to see empty seats behind the president of the United States as he addresses the country in his first presidential inaugural address, and that's really unfortunate. It's really acting like spoiled children is exactly what they are doing," Reagan said.

Reagan is the author of "Lessons My Father Taught Me: The Strength, Integrity, and Faith of Ronald Reagan," written with Jim Denney and published by Humanix.
