Michael Reagan Pleased Romney Letting Jeb Bush Run in 2016

By    |   Friday, 30 Jan 2015 12:26 PM

Political commentator and former first son Michael Reagan hopes that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton gets the Democrat nomination for president in 2016. If she does, Reagan said Friday on Newsmax TV's "America's Forum," he will vote for her in the California primary. "If she can't be beat by Republicans, we need to just pack up and go home," he said.

Discussing the GOP's slate of potential candidates, Reagan said he's pleased that former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and 2012 Republican nominee Mitt Romney met and apparently decided it was Bush's time to run.

"What happens is, it happened in 2012, you put eight conservatives on a platform with one moderate, Mitt Romney. The moderate is always going to win because the eight conservatives are going to split their own vote.

"Conservatives need to find out who they want and get behind that person, so they're not splitting votes to all of the primaries they're in fact after."

The party would be best served, he said, by picking two or three governors "and let them fight it out."

"The nation does much better when we have an executive in the position of president of the United States, [someone] that's already been in an executive position," he said. "I don't think a member of the Senate or a member of the House works in that direction because they write legislation. They could become very toxic, if you will, in the nominating process."

Additionally, he said, it doesn't help the party to put "eight people on stage who try to be more Reagan than Reagan."

Defining the word conservative has become increasingly challenging for Republicans, he said. There are social conservatives, fiscal conservatives and so many other groups within the party that it is difficult to find one candidate who appeals to everyone.

Those who want to occupy the White House need to follow President Ronald Reagan's example, and have a message and stick with it.

"Our problem today is we have too many candidates changing their message every time they give a speech," he said.

"They need to have a speech, where they stand on what they want to do, and allow people to reach to them because of their messaging — instead of always changing it up and getting caught later on like Mitt Romney did in 2012 with the 49 percent."
