Michael Reagan: Trump and Putin's Icebreaker a 'Good Sign'

Veteran political commentator Michael Reagan says he is pleased that Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin spoke for more than two hours at the G20 summit — but adds the president in no way should lift U.S. sanctions against Russia for its tampering in the 2016 presidential election.

And in fact, Reagan adds, Trump should be prepared to impose even more sanctions if it is discovered that Russia is involved in aiding North Korea, whose leader Kim Jong Un continues to test its nuclear capabilities in a clear threat to the United States.

"The president would be absolutely out of his mind to reduce the sanctions against Russia that were put in place because of the meddling. That would be a wrong thing for him to do politically, absolutely," Reagan, the son of former President Ronald Reagan, said Friday to Miranda Khan on Newsmax's "America Talks Live."

"Hopefully he does not do that but he says to Russia, if you're going to help North Korea, then you know something, then we are going to put more sanctions on . . . He's got to bring Russia, China on board to stop North Korea before there's hell to pay."

Reagan called the two-hour-and-16-minute length of the powwow between the two superpowers in "a good sign."

"I remember when my father invited Mikhail Gorbachev to go down to the boathouse and have a private meeting where they just got together and talked much longer than expected. In fact, it was a surprise," he said.

"That's always good when the president of the United States and the Vladimir Putins of the world . . . are spending more time together and discussing issues. Now, you're not going to hear all the information that was discussed . . . but the meat of it, I doubt we will hear for quite a while."

Reagan also believes Trump is ready to be tough with Russia, despite Friday's cordial sit down in Hamburg, Germany.

"It's about time Russia heard 'nyet' from a leader of the free world. And you know something, maybe Donald Trump is that next in line to finally say 'nyet' to a Soviet leader. Maybe that will be another 'nyet' heard 'round the world," he told Khan.

Reagan is the author of "Lessons My Father Taught Me: The Strength, Integrity, and Faith of Ronald Reagan," written with Jim Denney and published by Humanix Books.
