Michael Reagan: Trump 'Odd Guy Out' in Crowded GOP Field

By    |   Thursday, 09 Jul 2015 07:17 PM

Donald Trump is "the odd guy out" in the jam-packed Republican presidential candidate primary, but also the one to "watch … because he will say what he wants to say when he wants to say it without worrying about political correctness," political commentator Michael Reagan tells Newsmax TV.

In an interview Thursday with "Newsmax Prime" hosts J.D. Hayworth and Amanda Khan, the son of the late President Ronald Reagan said the real estate billionaire is getting more support from conservatives than mainstream Republicans.

"The reason that Jeb Bush does well and raises the amount of money he's been able to raise is because he actually splits the vote with no one while conservatives are going to split the votes with what, 10, 11, or 12 candidates?" Reagan said.

Conservatives, he added, are "on the way to make the same mistake in 2016 they made in 2012 and 2008."

"Conservatives need to find the horse and ride the horse that they want to get the nomination from – but they don't seem to be able to do that," he said.

"Donald Trump is the odd guy out here – and you've got to watch Donald Trump because he will say what he wants to say when he wants to say it without worrying about political correctness," he added.

Reagan said Trump's surge in the latest poll, puts him ahead of both Bush and Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul because "he is not playing politics."

"He is talking about issues that America's really thinking about and living, if you will, and everybody else is playing the political game at the same time," he said.

He also dismissed the furor over a call between the Republican National Committee's chairman, Reince Priebus, and Trump, scolding both of them for even "talking about this."

"It takes away from the issues of the day," he said. "Reince Priebus didn't need to make the call, we don't need Donald Trump talking about the call, it gets him off message. It gets the Republican Party off message at the same time."

Reagan also reiterated his view that Trump has "won" the first public debate with his immigration comments.

"He talked about immigration and what happened? The … mainstream media went out there and started attacking Donald Trump … [by going] to Republicans who are running for office," asking them "not what they thought about immigration, but what they thought about Donald Trump," Reagan said.

"So you have these politicians listening to their consultants saying, dump on Trump… while Trump was actually talking about the issue of the day."

Reagan conceded Trump, with his campaign slogan of "Make America Great Again," is emulating President Reagan's own slogan of "Let's Make America Great Again," joking: "That's not a bad thing either, as long as he doesn't show up in a cowboy hat in a poster...."

"Everybody's used my father because he's that last great person that they can in fact attach themselves to who really did lead America into greatness," Reagan said. "It's not wrong for Donald Trump to play off of that with his own bumper stick while everybody else talks about my father in their own vein."
