The key to whether there is any criminality surrounding Donald Trump Jr.'s meeting with Russian operatives who promised dirt about Hillary Clinton hinges on whether money changed hands to facilitate the powwow, veteran political commentator Michael Reagan told Newsmax TV on Friday.

Reagan said it is not uncommon for people with agendas to offer bribes for meetings with the president's inner circle.

In fact, he revealed to Miranda Khan, people who hoped to influence President Ronald Reagan sometimes tried to spread money around to get a meeting with him, believing that he could influence his dad on various policies.

"If I was part of the grand jury investigation, I'd be looking at [former Trump campaign chair] Paul Manafort, I'd be looking at the people who were in that room," Reagan, the son of Ronald Reagan, said to Miranda Khan on Newsmax's "America Talks Live."

"I'd like to find out who facilitated the meeting and see if money has changed hands . . . Because I will tell you, when my father was president, people were offered money to have meetings with me thinking that I could get them to the president of the United States of America.

"I know those things happen. So I'd like to see who facilitated the meeting, I'd look at their bank account and see if it increased because of that meeting."

This week, CNN reported that special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation is now focusing on the financial ties President Donald Trump's associates might have to Moscow "as one of the most fertile avenues for moving their probe forward."

Sources cited by CNN said the FBI is reviewing financial records related to the Trump Organization, as well as to the president, his associates, and his family members — including Donald Trump Jr.

And investigators are reportedly looking in the June 2016 meeting at Trump Tower that included Trump Jr., Manafort, Trump's senior adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner, and a Russian attorney. Mueller has also convened a grand jury to consider certain evidence.

Trump denies any collusion with Russia and insists he has "no involvement with Russia" and that he has "no loans, no nothing" from Russia.

Reagan is the author of "Lessons My Father Taught Me: The Strength, Integrity, and Faith of Ronald Reagan," published by Humanix.
