The rioting in Charlotte over the shooting of an African-American man by police is "outrageous" — but what is even more so is Police Chief Kerr Putney's refusal to release video of the incident, political commentator Michael Reagan told Newsmax TV on Thursday.

"It is outrageous," Reagan told "The Steve Malzberg Show" of the two days of violence in the city over the gunshot death of Keith Lamont Scott, 43, by authorities on Tuesday.

"Even more outrageous is the chief of police saying: 'There's really no compelling reason right now to show the video because why should I show the video now?'" Reagan added.

"You just sit there, and you have to think to yourself: 'What in the world are you thinking? What evidence do you need to compel you to show the video if indeed it is what you are saying it is?'

"Show the video — and at least work on trying to get these rioters under control," he advised. "But what does he do? No, he's not going to show it.

"No compelling reason."

The eldest son of former President Ronald Reagan, his new book is "Lessons My Father Taught Me: The Strength, Integrity, and Faith of Ronald Reagan."
