Civil Rights Leader Meyers: 'Illegal Immigration Is a Problem'

By    |   Wednesday, 08 Jul 2015 05:54 PM

Donald Trump is right about America's growing illegal immigrant problem — despite the whipping he's taking in the media, says Michael Meyers, president of the New York Civil Rights Coalition.

"I listened to Donald Trump's comment. I didn't hear what CNN and the other networks heard. I didn't hear it. I heard he said there's a problem with illegal immigration and guess what, there is a problem with illegal immigration," Meyers said Wednesday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"Trump's in trouble because he didn't speak eloquently. But I will say it: illegal immigration is a problem."

The billionaire developer, who is seeking the 2016 GOP presidential nomination, has been under heavy fire for comments he made about illegal immigrants pouring into the United States as he kicked off his campaign last month.

"When Mexico sends its people, they're not sending their best. They're sending people that have lots of problems, and they're bringing those problems with them. They're bringing drugs. They're bringing crime. They're rapists. And some, I assume, are good people," Trump said.

But Meyers, who is also a columnist for the New York Daily News, said Trump's argument has "nothing to do with Hispanics or anybody else."

"If you are illegal, you're not supposed to be in the country and the only way you deport 12 million people? You start with the first one. They get the message," Meyers said.

"When you start clamping down and enforcing the law, those people are going to start deporting themselves because they are not going to live under the radar like Mayor [Bill] de Blasio [of New York City] wants them to do and [Ed Lee] the mayor of San Francisco."

He was referring to the status of New York and San Francisco as "sanctuary cities" — communities that refuse to honor federal requests to hold people found to be in the United States illegally.

In San Francisco, a 32-year-old woman was recently shot to death allegedly by an illegal immigrant who has been deported to his native Mexico five times.
