Rep. Michael McCaul: Can't Put Head in Sand on Terrorism

By    |   Tuesday, 19 Jan 2016 05:28 PM

House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Michael McCaul tells Newsmax TV his new book exposing terrorist threats is all about confronting the problem rather than pretending it doesn't exist.

"It is about reality, and you can't just put your head in the sand," McCaul told "The Hard Line" host Ed Berliner on Tuesday.

"There are bad actors out there, evil does exist in the world," McCaul said. "I wish it didn't."

Just as his father's generation took on fascism and communism, the current threat is Islamic extremism, McCaul said.

"We really have to call it what it is, define it and defeat it," he said. "I don't think this administration has really wanted to deal with that threat adequately. This president always calls it something else, workplace violence, blame it on a video, whatever."

The best Homeland Security defense, he said, is a good offense, and that's why his book, "Failures of Imagination: The Deadliest Threats to our Homeland – and How to Thwart Them," looks at multiple possible scenarios and how they should be thwarted ahead of time.

"9/11 was a failure of imagination, according to the 9/11 Commission. Pearl Harbor was as well, and we have to stay in front of the evolving threat to stop it," McCaul said.

The Texas Republican said he was disappointed by all three Democratic presidential candidates, who, when asked about their top three priorities in Sunday's debate, failed to mention national security.

The American public lists that as their top concern, McCaul said.

"They want to feel safe, and the reason they don't is because this administration has created more problems around the world that are threats now to our country," he said.

"Our military is one of the weakest levels since before WWII. That's very, very dangerous. Sequestration has dropped the budgets in the military so we're not capable of dealing with multiple threats across the globe."

McCaul said he is concerned President Barack Obama's executive action blocking deportation of 5 million illegal immigrants violated the Constitution and he is happy the Supreme Court has agreed to take up the case.

"Congress has the authority under the Constitution to unite the immigration laws in this nation," he said. "This was an end-around the Constitution."
