The Obama administration is "cutting our losses on a program that has badly failed" by ending the $500 million effort to train Syrian rebels to fight the Islamic State, retired Air Force Gen. Michael Hayden told Newsmax TV on Friday.

"We're moving in a different direction, maybe turning and equipping some of the militias that we can live with that are already there," Hayden, who directed both the CIA and the National Security Agency, told "Newsmax Prime" host J.D. Hayworth. "I just don't know if the administration has the stomach to do anything that's going to be really impactful on the Syrian battlefield."

Turning his attention to reports that one of the CIA's top Libyan intelligence sources was named in an email that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton sent to the State Department via her private email server, Hayden said that "it's likely" that the document passed through her private system.

"Once you set it up this way, you're headed for disaster," he told Hayworth. "There's just no way of making this right."

"That name or identity of whoever is in that excised portion should never have been put in there. But, then again, she's the one that set up her ability to receive these kinds of emails only through her unclassified server."

Hayden also assumed that China or other countries are even more determined to hack into her system.

"In many ways, I would lose all respect for some of our counterparts out there — the Russians, Chinese and other services — if they were not aware of this and, secondly, if they didn't go after it and go after it aggressively."
