Michael Hayden on Trump's Nuclear Remarks: 'Very Unsettling'

Retired Air Force Gen. Michael Hayden told Newsmax TV on Wednesday that Donald Trump's assertions that other countries — including Japan and South Korea — might need to develop nuclear weapons amounted to "one heck of a roll of a dice."

"That's actually pretty far behind the edge," Hayden, who headed both the CIA and the National Security Agency, told "Newsmax Prime" host J.D. Hayworth. "One of the two or three really big problems we face is the proliferation of nuclear weapons.

"One of the tools we have to slow or stop nuclear proliferation is to extend an American nuclear guarantee to our friends, thereby creating a disincentive for our friends to go down this nuclear path.

"What you just saw the candidate say was he doesn't mind that they go down a nuclear path," Hayden said. "Boy, that really makes me nervous.

"The last line where he says and they got to step up or they go to pay us, that actually equates our alliance system with a Staten Island protection racket."

In a CNN town hall in Milwaukee on Tuesday, the Republican presidential front-runner said that the United States spends too much money protecting other countries — adding that countries obtaining nuclear weapons was "going to happen anyway."

Hayden called the remarks "very unsettling" because funding for U.S. troops abroad is paid for by allies.

"We've got about 28,000 troops in North Korea. If we brought them home, they will be infinitely more expensive to the American taxpayer than they are now because they are substantially supportive by South Korean funding.

"The same thing applies to U.S. forces in Japan," he said. "Our allies to provide substantial funding for our forces.

"The only way you can save money with regard to those forces is to make them go away because if we bring them home, they're going to cost a lot more."
