Michael Hayden: Nuclear Deal Forces US to 'Check' Iran

By    |   Thursday, 16 Jul 2015 08:54 PM

The nuclear deal with Tehran will "make it more necessary for the United States to be more active in the Middle East to keep the Iranians in check" because they are still holding four American hostages, retired Air Force Gen. Michael Hayden told Newsmax TV on Thursday.

"It should be a lesson learned for all of us that the Iranians didn't volunteer this in order to show they're taking a new direction," Hayden, who headed both the CIA and the National Security Agency, told "Newsmax Prime" hosts J.D. Hayworth and Miranda Khan.

"Here are the Iranians, who had an opportunity to show that they were setting out on a new course of action, and they simply refused to take it," Hayden added. "In fact, they didn't even entertain the question."

He noted how President Barack Obama said at a Wednesday news conference that "he had a hope that the Iranians would now change course.

"Based upon what happened with regard to these people unjustly being held … the Iranians didn't move on that," Hayden said. "That might give you some evidence as to what kind of expectations you might have that these guys are going to change policy and change direction."

Regarding the ability to inspect Iran's nuclear operations, the terms of the deal are so cumbersome that it's "more than a brick shy of a load" when it comes to inspections at "anywhere, anytime," Hayden said.

"What we've got is a negotiating process, whereby the Iranians could object and it gets elevated to another body and finally to another body before the inspectors, we would hope, are permitted to go to an installation," he told Hayworth and Khan. "So, it's not anytime, anywhere."
