Ex-Rep. Michael Flanagan: Le Pen Would Give France Global Influence Again

Former Rep. Michael Patrick Flanagan tells Newsmax TV France would regain international prominence for the first time in a century if its voters elect Marine Le Pen president.

And the rightwing National Front leader may also be able to smooth the rocky relations between the United States and Russia, he believes.

"I think Marine Le Pen she is going to prevail and I say that from a point of confidence," Flanagan, an Illinois Republican who recently met with Le Pen, said Monday to Newsmax TV's JD Hayworth.

"She is in a unique position in the world right now to be able to, as president of France, broker her relationship personally between [President Donald] Trump and [Russian President Vladimir] Putin.

"I think if she would talk about that a little bit, that would give her the international chops she needs because I don't think there's anyone else on earth who can midwife a relationship between those two like she could."

That would make France a leading player in world affairs — prominence it hasn't had for "a century," according to Flanagan, who now heads Flanagan Consulting LLC, a Washington D.C.-based lobbying firm.

"I think she's in a very wonderful place right now and she's working very hard and I think she's going to be victorious in the end because I don't think the French people are going to let her down.

"People were afraid to say they were for Trump. Brexit the same. I think Marine Le Pen is being painted the same way."

On Sunday, Le Pen scored victory as one of two candidates who will face each other in a May 7th runoff for the French presidency for France. She grabbed 21.3 percent of the vote to former economy minister Emmanuel Macron's 24 percent.

"Macron so far has placed himself … incorrectly or falsely as a centrist outsider. He is not a centrist. He owns the economy over there. He owns this 10 percent unemployment," Flanagan said.

"He has been embraced by every leftist leader all over Europe … If she can paint him correctly and bury him with the leftist insider that he is, instead of the centrist outsider he pretends to be, she'll beat him."
